Because they are quick and simple you can spend time trying out your own ideas.
To make a lovely collection of crochet hearts appliques, decorations or embellishments.
Which Yarn To Use For Your Crochet Hearts
For the patterns shown below and photographed in this post, I have used either Sirdar Snuggly Baby Crofter DK yarn in Bonnie (varying shaded pinks), or DMC Wooly Merino wool in dark pink.
[wp_ad_camp_2]You can of course make your own hearts in whatever color you choose, but these patterns also translate well to differ yarn weights.
Check out our conversion charts section here for a guide to which sized hooks to use for the various yarn weights.
Remember, as a general rule of thumb the heavier the yarn the bigger the hook you will need and correspondingly the larger your finished crochet heart will be when following the exact same pattern.
Single Crochet Heart
This first crochet heart pattern makes a heart shape which is small in size and delicate in nature. It is made primarily of single crochets, and the only other techniques it requires are chains and slip stitches.
To make this crochet heart you will need:
- Pink DK yarn
- 3.5mm hook
- sharp scissors
Single Crochet, Crochet Heart Pattern
This pattern builds up in rows. Begin with your 3.5mm hook and pink DK yarn.
Row 1 – Chain 3 (ch3), make a single crochet (sc) into the third chain from the hook. Ch2.
Row 2 – 1sc into the third stitch from the hook (skipping the 2ch). 2sc into the next stitch. Ch2.
Row 3 – 1sc into third stitch from hook. 1sc in next 2 stitches (1sc x 2). 2sc into the last stitch of the row. Ch3.
Row 4 – Slip stitch (sl st) into the fifth stitch from the hook (skipping ch3 and 1sc). Sl st into next st. Ch3, and skipping the next stitch sl st into the last stitch of the row to join.
Double Crochet Heart
The double crochet heart pattern makes a similar heart shape, with a slightly larger finish and extended stitch length.
The techniques required include chaining, single crochet (US), double crochet (US), treble crochet (US) and slip stitches.
To make this crochet heart you will need:
- Pink DK yarn
- 5 mm hook
- sharp scissors
Double Crochet, Crochet Heart Pattern
This pattern also builds up in rows. Begin with your 5mm hook and pink DK yarn. Watch for the main pattern difference in the build of the heart’s crested top.
Row 1 – Chain 4 (ch4), make a double crochet (dc) into the fourth chain from the hook. Ch3.
Row 2 – 1dc into the fourth stitch from the hook. 2dc into the next stitch. Ch3.
Row 3 – 1dc into fourth stitch from hook. 1dc in next 2 stitches (1dc x 2). 2dc into the last stitch of the row. Ch3.
Row 4 – Make 1dc and one treble crochet (tr) into the fourth stitch from the hook. In the next stitch make 1sc then slip stitch (sl st). Sl st and 1sc into the next stitch. 1tr and 1dc into the next.
Finally, chain 3 and sl st to join into the final stitch of the row.
Granny Triangle Crochet Heart
The granny triangle crochet heart pattern is based on the traditional granny square design. As the name suggests, a granny triangle is simply a granny square with three sides instead of four.
Making your granny triangle crochet heart will require the use of chaining, slip stitches, single crochets, double crochets and treble crochets.
To make this crochet heart you will need:
- Pink DK yarn
- 5 mm hook
- sharp scissors
- yarn needle (helpful, but not essential)
A yarn needle has been added to the equipment list for this pattern as sewing in the loose ends can be quicker when you use one, and granny square patterns always require more sewing in as your yarn is detached at the end of each row.
Granny Triangle Crochet Heart Pattern
This pattern is based upon the traditional granny square row by row increase.
Begin using your 5 mm hook and DK yarn.
Chain 3 and slip stitch into the first chain to form a loop.
Ch 3 to form the first double crochet (dc). Work 2dc into the centre of the loop.
Chain 3, then 3dc into the loop centre. Chain 3, 3dc into the loop centre.
Make a final chain of 3, then slip stitch to the top of the first chain to join. Cut off a long tail of yarn for later sewing in.
Row 2
Into one corner gap, make a chain of 2 stitches. Make 6dc into the same corner, then slip stitch into the 2nd stitch from that corner (forming the central point of the heart). Chain 2, then make 7dc into the next corner gap.
From here we will be building the sides of the heart, so make 1sc into each of the next 3dcs from the previous row.
Into the next corner gap make 1sc, 1dc, 1tr, 1dc, 1sc. Make 1sc into each of the next 3dcs as you did on the other side. Slip stitch to the starting chain to join.
Closed Granny Triangle Crochet Heart
The closed granny triangle crochet heart is a variation on the above pattern. The main difference being the closed bottom section. Giving it less gaps when complete and therefore a different look.
To make this crochet heart you will need:
- Pink DK yarn
- 5 mm hook
- sharp scissors
- yarn needle
Closed Granny Triangle Crochet Heart Pattern
This pattern is based upon the traditional granny square row by row increase.
Begin using your 5mm hook and DK yarn.
Make a chain of 4 stitches, and slip stitch to join in a loop. Chain 3 from here (to form the first double crochet). Make 2dc into the centre of the ring, chain 3, make 3 dc and chain 3 again.
Make 6dc also into the centre of the loop, then make 3 treble crochets (tr) next to them, then make 3dc again.
Finally slip stitch into the top of your chain to close the round. Cut off leaving a long tail for sewing in later.
Row 2
Into one of the two corners, make a chain of three stitches (forming the first double crochet). Then into the same corner make 11 double crochets.
Slip stitch into the second dc of the previous row at the edge of the corner. (Forming the dip of the heart in the middle of this section).
Make 12 dc into the next corner along so that the two top sides match.
Skip the next stitch, then put 1sc in each of the previous row’s stitches around the circumferance of the heart.
Skip the final stitch, and slip stitch into the top of the starting chain to join.
Large Crochet Heart
The large crochet hart is a great pattern as you can make it as big as you like simply by adding rows.
This crochet heart embellishment is ideal for enhancing big blankets or acting as a statement applique on items of clothing.
To make this crochet heart you will need:
- Pink DK yarn
- 3.5 mm hook
- sharp scissors
Large Crochet Heart Pattern
This crochet heart pattern begins in the same manner as the earlier double crochet heart.
The techniques required will include chaining and double crochets as previously, but you will also need to know how to crochet a decrease by crocheting two stitches together.
Row 1 – Make a chain of 4 stitches. Double crochet (dc) into the 1st ch, then ch3.
Row 2 – 1dc into the 4th stitch from the hook. 2dc into the next stitch. Ch 3.
Row 3 – 1dc into the 4th stitch from the hook, 1dc into next 2 stitches (1dc x 2). 2dc into the last stitch of the row. Ch 3.
Row 4 – 1dc into 4th stitch from the hook. 1dc x 4. 2dc into last stitch. Ch 3.
Row 5 – 1dc into 4th stitch from the hook. 1dc x 6. 2dc into last stitch. Ch 3.
Row 6 – 1dc into 4th stitch from hook. 1dc x 8. 2dc into last stitch in the row. Ch 3.
Row 7 – 1dc into 4th stitch from hook. 1dc x 10. 2dc into last stitch. Ch 3.
Row 8 – double crochet the first two stitches together (dc2tog). 1dc x 3, slip stitch x 2, 1dc x 3, dc2tog. When the row is complete chain 3 as previously.
Row 9 – dc2tog, 1dc, sl st x 2, 1dc, then dc2tog to finish.
Sewing In Crochet Heart Ends
Each of these heart patterns when complete will require at least two loose ends to be sewn in.
I find that the easiest way to do this is to use a yarn needle, but it is fine to use a crochet hook if you don’t have one to hand. The benefit of the yarn needle is the smaller tip is more maneouverable, allowing you to slip through the tiniest parts of a stitch to better disguise your yarn thread.
The smaller you make your sewn stiches the better you can hide them within the pattern. I recommend making at least three stitches to give a long enough tail that a partial unravelling of them won’t result in your entire piece coming apart.
Crochet Heart Ideas
The sky’s the limit when it comes to uses for your crochet hearts.
With their size and texture so adaptable from these easy patterns, you should fine it simple to create one to suit your purpose.
Whether you are producing stand alone pieces like key chains or broaches, or embellishing your fabric clothes or crochet blankets.
Happy Crocheting! x
