Today I’m going to share an amazing range of free crochet blanket patterns and ideas that you can use to make your own amazing crochet blankets.
Along with my top tip for making your crochet blanket totally unique even when you’re following patterns. These designs will range from beginner friendly, simple techniques to more complicated and elaborate intermediate and advanced designs. So what are we waiting for? Let’s get started!
3D Flowers

This simple yet stylish 3D flower granny square is a great way to create a blanket that has tonnes of visual impact as well as a fabulously tactile texture. I think it’s best used in a blanket either alternating with a some classic granny squares, or with another three dimensional design.
3D Snowflakes

It’s not just for Christmas, this gorgeous raised snowflake is a cute design that you can make up in a variety of colors to work beautifully for any time of year. I also think it looks cute with the flower design we’ve just looked at too.
Basket Weave

I am playing around with basket weave stitches a lot at the moment. The blanket i’m making is a combination of oranges, reds and creams, and it’s looking great. I’ll share a picture when it’s done, but trust me! This is an intermediate or advanced stitch, but it’s fast to make once you’ve got confident with it, and there is no arguing with the wonderful texture and look when it comes together.
Ribbed Granny Squares

Do you love knitted blankets but you can’t knit for toffee? Me too! And this crocheted ribbing is a great alternative. Okay if you can knit it’ll be quicker to knit ribbing, but if you never managed to work needles the way you can handle hooks, then definitely give this one a go.
Bean Stitches

You can create a really chunky, tactile feel with bean stitches. They’re a robust and squishy choice for blankets, and they come in two different sizes which gives you the scope to really get creative.
Bullion Stitches

This distinctive stitch is a little piece of understated luxury, proving that some things just can’t be rushed. Although it uses a bit of a different tool, it is well worth that extra effort and learning curve. With its tightly wound coil of yarn, the bullion stitch is a slow and satisfying challenge that results in a unique and elegant texture. It’s a hallmark of a project made with time, care, and a little bit of crochet experience.
Ripples and Waves

Ripple stitches are a classic way to crochet, and one that I think is frequently underestimated. There are a wealth of varieties, and ways to make a blanket look totally unique with a pretty common stitch.
Circle Granny Squares

Looking for a quick and fun way to add a pop of color and pattern to your projects? Circle granny squares are an easy and effective way to use contrasting shapes and leftover yarn to create a truly unique and visually interesting blanket.
Classic Granny Squares

I’d be remiss not to mention the original granny square pattern. If you’re here, you probably already know all about it, but they deserve a bit more recognition! Particularly when you combine them with other styles.
Solid Granny Squares

I’m going out on a limb here, but solid granny squares are one of the single greatest ways to create blankets. They use a little more yarn than the classic granny, but they are also warmer, cuddlier and in some ways neater when we use them. And they look great when worked with classic granny square rounds too.
Feather Stitches

Looking for a stitch that’s both attractive and consistent? Based on half-double crochet, the feather stitch creates perfectly even stitches every time. Its dense and squishy texture makes it an ideal choice for cozy baby blankets.
Shell Stitches

Shell stitches are an amazing way to create a standout blanket that looks a lot more complicated than it actually is!
V Stitches

V-stitches are one of those techniques that have a huge variety of options and fabulous finishes, and they also make for quite a classic blanket style that works well for baby blankets.
Waffle Stitches

I have a love hate relationship with waffle stitches. I adore the texture and finish, but my goodness, do they take me a long time to make up. A great, fun project but not for those who want a blanket done fast!
Heart Granny Squares

I love modern takes on crochet classics, and if you do too then the heart granny square is the place to go. These make for really standout blankets, especially when you lean into the bold color combinations.
Star Granny Squares

Star granny squares are bold blanket designs, but they can also be easily themed for fun Christmas blankets or as a cute design for a baby’s stroller blanket!
Diagonal Granny Squares

Another of my top choices for crochet blankets is the diagonal design. It gives such a bold finish, but it’s super easy to put together.
Sun Granny Squares

I made the blanket you can see pictured here a few years ago now, but it’s still one that I love the most. A simple sun with shades of yellow, blue and grey has a surprisingly huge impact. And it was a very well received gift too!
Block Stitches

Block stitch is often referred to as an easy crochet blanket design, but I have to say I think it’s a little trickier than people say. And that’s because it’s a bit of a tangle to deal with two or more lines of yarn at the same time. That said, the finish is well worth the effort.
Linen Stitches

A linen stitch granny square is also known as a moss stitch square, or a granite stitch square. Granny squares come in all kinds of textures, designs, and sizes, and the linen square is one of the simplest.
