Free Crochet Sun Granny Square Pattern
I’ve been crocheting for nearly a decade now, and although amigurumi is really my speciality, I always come back to granny squares when I want to unwind. My sun granny squares are destined to become part of the big crochet granny square blanket that I’m currently creating in the evenings.
Originally I’d intended to make the sections all repeat the same colored yarns, but once I’d made up a dozen with the blue sky ring, I decided it was overpowering the design a little. So I started working up more suns that shone in a muted background.
I’m really pleased with the results, and I hope you love crocheting my pattern as much as I do.
I’ve recorded a full tutorial, where you can watch me make up a granny square and talk through the pattern.
Please accept my apologies for my hands wandering off camera occasionally, I was using a new neck support for filming and I am still finding my feet with the angles. Hopefully newer videos using it will be more reliably pointing in the right direction all of the time!
What I Used
To make up my sunny skies granny squares I used four different yarns, and a 3.75mm crochet hook.
This pattern will work up perfectly with any DK weight yarn and the same sized hook, but if you want to copy mine exactly you’ll need:
- Sirdar Snuggly DK yarn (*paid link), in Tangerine Twist.
- Sirdar Snuggly Baby Cashmere Merino DK (*paid link), in Cream.
- Sublime cotton silk DK yarn, in Dove Gray
- Sirdar Country Classic DK yarn (*paid link), in Duck Egg Blue
Notes
This is a written pattern, and I focussed on making it totally beginner friendly with the help of a basic stitch guide or the video tutorial I’ve linked above.
I measured up for you, and the final square is about 4.5 inches (12cm) wide, and the outer edge contains 22 stitches.
The amount of yarn you’ll need in terms of yardage totally depends on what you end up using the granny squares for. But roughly speaking, if you’re going to turn it into a granny square blanket you’ll be looking at about eight skeins of yarn, at least.
The Sun Granny Square Pattern
Begin working in your orange yarn with your 3.75mm crochet hook.
Round 1
Make a magic circle of eight stitches, slip stitching into the top of the first stitch to close it.
Round 2
Chain three as the first double crochet, and make a double crochet into the same stitch. Then make two double crochets into each stitch of the round.
At the end of the round, slip stitch into the top of the initial chain to join.
Round 3
Chain five, as the first double crochet and chain two.
*Make one double crochet into the next stitch, then chain two. Repeat from * for the rest of the round.
At the end of the round, slip stitch into the top of the third chain to close.
Tie off and color chage to blue (or cream if you are making the toned down squares).
Round 4
Cast on and put your hook through one of the chain spaces. Chain three as your first double crochet, then put two further double crochets into the same space.
*In the next space make three double crochets, then chain one. Repeat from * for the rest of the round.
Slip stitch into the top of the first chain of the round to close.
Color change to cream (if you haven’t already!).
Round 5
Cast on and into one of the chain spaces, make a single crochet.
*(Chain three, then make 1 single crochet into the next chain space) three times. Now chain six to make the corner space, and make one single crochet into the next chain space. Repeat from * for the duration of the round.
Slip stitch into the top of the first chain of the round to close.
Round 6
Slip stitch into the next chain space to begin the round.
Chain three as the first double crochet, then make two further double crochets into the chain space.
Put three double crochets into the next two chain spaces, then make (five double crochets, two chains, five double crochets), into the corner space.
*Make three double crochets into the next three chain spaces, then five double crochets, two chains and five more double crochets into the corner. Repeat from * for the rest of the round. At the end of the round, slip stitch into the top of the chain three to close.
Color change to gray.
Round 7
You are now going to work the border. Cast on with the new color, and insert your hook.
Begin with a chain three as the first double crochet, then *put one double crochet into each stitch along the edge of the square. Work (one double crochet, one treble crochet, one double crochet) into the corner space.
Repeat from * for the duration of the round. Then slip stitch into the top of the starting chain to finish.
Finishing Off
To complete my square, I used a finer hook or yarn needle to weave the loose ends of yarn into my stitches. Color matching to make it less obvious.
Once you’ve made up a few, start planning how you are going to join them together. I turned my squares into a lovely throw, pictured here on the back of my couch.
Happy Crocheting!

Hi Sherlyn, The pattern is free, you don’t need to pay, just follow the instructions on this page 🙂
Hey there! Love this pattern! Which stitch are you using to make the magic ring? I know how to make one, just not the specific stitch you used in it.
Thanks! I used single crochets in my magic circle, if you pop over to my YouTube channel there is a tulip tutorial on there where I demonstrate my method. Hope that helps!
