Crochet Mother’s Day Gifts

Mother’s day might be a bit commercialised these days, but it’s still a great excuse to thank one of the most important women in our lives for everything they do and have done for us. It’s easy to pop to the shops and grab a box of chocolates or a bunch of flowers, but that has never been my style. If I’m getting my mother a gift, it’s got to be one that has a bit of extra meaning. Something that won’t just be a gesture, but that will show you’ve been the extra mile.

The perfect crochet mother’s day gift is obviously going to depend hugely on what your Mom likes, so I’m going to put together a cute selection of crocheted ideas for you. And I’ll make sure a few of them are quick, just in case like me you have a tendency to leave things to the last minute…

Keychains

Crochet keychains make sure lovely gifts, and everyone can use a good keychain, right! My crochet keychain patterns come in several different styles, so you can pick one that will go just right with your Mother’s style or interests. If she’s got a favorite animal, see if you can find one that matches it here!

Remember that you can make these designs in any yarn colors that you fancy, or that you think your Mom will appreciate. If none of the standard styles of keyfob made up from stitches takes your fancy, remember that you can do the same thing by making a long rectangular sample of your favorite stitch!

Accessories

Home decor and simple accessories also make for excellent presents for your loved ones. My personal favorites from this selection are probably the hot water bottle cover or the fingerless gloves. The coasters and scrunchies are also a great way to make several adorable gifts in a pretty short space of time too. And my advice, if your Mom is also a Cat Mom, then the cat hammock is a really good way to go.

Things to consider

  • What is your Mom’s favorite color? Pick your yarn to match their style, not yours
  • Think about whether they’ve mentioned losing, breaking or missing anything recently. You might be able to create a new one for them!
  • Texture matters. Go for yarns that don’t look nice, they feel nice too.
  • Less is often more. Many people will be more happy with a small gift that they can easily store than something that might be hard to find a place for in their home.

Maybe avoid

  • Allergens! Some people react to wool, if your Mother has ever complained that their hats or scarves are itchy, best swerve that wool based yarn.
  • Clothes. When you hand make clothing it is so hard to get the sizing right. It’s just not worth the stress unless you are incredibly confident that you know their measurements.
  • Jokes. I know some families have in-jokes, we probably all do, but think carefully about whether Mother’s day is the right time to do something that could be taken the wrong way…

Flowers

Go classic, without having to lean into the traditional! Flowers are a really great option for gifting on some many occasions, and crochet flowers are something I’ve used several times to make presents for people who I care for. In fact, that’s why we have the range of flower types that we do right now, because those are all my favorite people’s favorite species!

You can make a bunch of flowers that are all the same variety, or a bunch of different flowers as a beautiful bouquet!
