Crochet Cat Bed – Free Pattern

I have been having so much fun crocheting for my new kittens, and my latest pattern is a crochet cat bed! I went with the cave type, that they can hide in, and I’m so please with how it turned out. I used macrame cord because it holds the structure really well, and stands up much better than regular yarn to kitty teeth and claws.
Before I’d even finished creating this cat bed, my little tabby Tango had already done an excellent job of pressuring testing my stitches, along with trying to eat the hook I’d chosen to use…
What You’ll Need
- 3mm Macrame cord in cream, light pink and dark pink. 100g of each.
- 6mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Thick yarn needle
A Warning
This is a project worked in macrame cord. I stand by this being the best thing to use for longevity and stability of the structure, but it is hard going to work. I have a few blisters from trying to rush to finish this, and it just isn’t necessary. Don’t be silly like me, and just work on it for a little while each day for a week. Don’t try to knock it out in a couple of evenings, your skin won’t thank you!

Stitches
- Magic circle
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- 2sc – make two single crochets into one stitch
- sc2tog – join two stitches with a single crochet

The Sides
We are going to work in stripes, starting with the same dark pink shade. This pattern will build up the sides, working back and forth, leaving one either of the circumference of the sides empty for your cat to come and go.
Start by marking one of these areas with stitch markers, so that you don’t need to count as you go back and forth. Face the bottom (wrong side) of the bed’s base towards you to begin work.

Insert your hook at one of your stitch markers, ch2 and make 1sc into each stitch of the round, working into the back loop only. (95)

Slip stitch, sew closed, tie off and cut with a long yarn tail, which you can now hide inside the cat bed.
Finishing the doorway
Work around the edge of the doorway, using your dark pink yarn. Facing the door of the cat bed towards you, start working from the bottom left hand corner and make 1sc into each stitch around the edge for two rounds.

Round 1 – 2
Join one stitch away from the bottom left corner. ch2, sc2tog, then make 1sc into each stitch until the next corner. sc2tog then continue in the same manner, working 1sc into each stitch and sc2tog at each corner. Work around the entrance twice, then slst to join and weave in the loose end.
