My most complicated crochet patterns are all amigurumi, but what makes them tricky varies quite a lot between the designs. From unusual techniques to finer work, surface crocheting and complex patterns, these designs will help you stretch your crocheting skills while still having fun.
I’ve tried to make even these more complicated amigurumi designs beginner friendly by adding detailed descriptions to the patterns, but you’ll probably find that they’re best attempted once you’re a few projects into your crocheting journey.
Pine Marten
I designed my pine marten pattern to have the posture of the real stoat-like creature, and to do that I created an open insert section in the body. Joining these two sections and lining up the color changes needs a calm touch.
Alpaca
My cute alpaca pattern has several aspects that are straight forward, but attaching the hair is a skilled job. Those comfortable working with a needle should find it a doddle, however!
Woolly Sheep
Much like his alpaca friend, this little sheep has a lot of wool to contend with. Winding the curly yarn chains into position
Pekingese Puppy
There are a few things that make the little Pekingese a tricky pattern. The most obvious one is the hair. It’s not so much difficult as it is fiddly. You’ll need a good eye and a steady hand to weave in that unkempt mane!
Winter Crochet Doll
This one of my most complicated crochet patterns because it involves a lot of separate sections, color changes and techniques. But bundles of wintery fun, nonetheless!
Amigurumi Elf Doll
My amigurumi Christmas elf is similarly styled to my winter crochet doll, but her hair is even more curly and elaborate, with a complicated crochet hat to top it all off.
The Goat
I’m obsessed with this amigurumi goat. He might be a challenge to crochet, but it’s well worth the effort for the bearded little chap.
Highland Cow
Funnily enough, it’s not the cool hairdo that makes this amigurumi cow a crochet challenge. It’s the scale and the horns. You’ll need to swap to a small hook, and work in those changes in shape and attachment points with care.
Walrus
The trickiest part of my walrus pattern is the tusks, because they build in small rounds from the magic circle. You’ll also need to be happy with a fair bit of hand sewing.
Day Gecko
My crocheted giant Madagascar day gecko actually looks more complicated than she is. She’s got a fair bit of hand sewing for the detailing, but her most challenging part is those fiddly little feet.
Crocodile
Surface crocheting and working with a small hook make this crocodile pattern a bit of a challenge, but one that you’ll have a lot of fun conquering!
Squid
Although it is definitely beginner friendly, a big dash of surface crocheting, shaping and back loop only make this one of my trickier patterns overall.
Stegosaurus
Finally, we’ve got my cute little stegosaurus. The surface crocheting and fine sewing make this a step up from beginner standard, and hopefully they help the design to pop too!
