I cannot describe the pride I felt the first time I crocheted an accessory that I was able to subtly show off. For me, the first item was a scarf I crocheted not long after I had learned. It was a simple infinity scarf with single crochet stitches, but I put my heart and soul into it so every time someone told me how much they liked it, the feeling was wonderful. And the joy is so much more than just pride, because it’s also an amazing way to create an environment or style that looks exactly how you want it to.

In these days of fast fashion and mass produced home decor, I love the fact that my living room is a sea of crochet throw pillows that I made myself. And one of my biggest accessorizing passions at the moment is bags.

BAGS AND PURSES

I must admit, I am quite picky about which bags I like to use. I get frustrated by strap lengths that don’t work with my long arms, or handles that have either a texture so rough I don’t want to hold it or so smooth that it slides out of my fingers. Fortunately, when I crochet my bag myself I can avoid any of those issues. And use exactly the colors that I want to use!

If you are considering crocheting your own bag, I advise being careful which yarn you use. Interestingly, yarn weight provided you adjust the pattern scale accordingly, isn’t a huge deal. But with bags, fiber really is. I have used everything from acrylic to pure cotton yarns in the past, but these days I am very set on either a 60% cotton/acrylic blend or a nylon blend. These two fiber mixes have quite different finishes to each other, but they both provide enough stretch that the bag feels comfortable, but a strong enough structure that you can actually make practical use of it. These are not just decorative projects to me, I want to be able to put stuff in this accessory!

CROCHET KEYCHAINS

I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love crocheting keychains. They are so varied in design, quick and easy to make, and they can be used as fabulous last minute gifts too!

CROCHET SCARVES

QUICK AND EASY DESIGNS

The first scarf I ever crocheted was the infinity scarf, and it’s still a really relaxing style of project that I go back to. Although that photo of me was taken ten years ago, I still feel the same way about these fun scarves.

CROCHET HEADBANDS

Headbands are such a fun way to make great use of your crochet skills. My favorite style of headband uses waffle stitches, and I have a few different sizes that you can try!

WINTER WARMERS

crochet to keep you cozy!

In the cold weather I always take some solace in the fact that I get to wear some snuggly crocheted clothing. I do love crocheting hats, but fingerless gloves are probably my favorite chilly project because I get to choose exactly the yarn that feels warmest, softest and most durable. Which isn’t always easy to find in shop bought gloves!

Crochet At Home

Another great way to celebrate crochet in your home is to create your very own gorgeous hot water bottle covers!

Crochet Throw Pillows

I absolutely love crocheting pillows to accessorize my living room, although some of these have now been unceremoniously removed to my children’s bedrooms as they loved them too much!
