My Cockapoo crochet pattern is based on a real Cockapoo, Chester, owned by my lovely friend Marian. Marian was my nextdoor neighbor, and my daughter grew up playing fetch regularly with him in their backyard. When we moved away, Marian and I stayed firm friends. I made the original crochet Cockapoo as a gift, and I hope you’ll find an equally good use for the pattern when you crochet your own Cockapoo toy!
The trickiest part of designing the Cockapoo crochet pattern was getting the curls right. I’ve crocheted a Poodle dog previously, but I wasn’t convinced the tight waves in the hair were right for this mixed breed puppy! In the end I settled for hand sewing the curls, and i’ve got to tell you, it’s not fast but it really works.
To create this crochet toy pattern you’ll need to be fairly confident with a yarn needle as well as a crochet hook. The bulk of the toy is worked from magic circles, with repeating increased and decreased single crochet stitches.

What You’ll Need For Your Crocheted Cockapoo Dog Toy
Here’s what I used when designing my Cockapoo crochet pattern:
- 200g Sublime extra fine merino wool DK
- 4mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- 10g brown DK yarn
- Toy safe stuffing
- Safety eyes
I used the soft and bright Sublime brand merino wool, but you don’t have to stick to this brand. This pattern will work up just fine in any DK yarn, just make sure you switch out your crochet hook size if using something that’s a heavier weight.
The brown DK yarn I used to sew my crochet Cockapoo’s nose was just some left in my yarn scraps stash, so I’m afraid I don’t know the exact brand. But you can color match to your chosen Cockapoo, if you like!
Cockapoo Crochet Pattern Notes
This crochet Cockapoo pattern is beginner friendly. It’s largely worked in continuous rounds from central magic circles. However, watch out when crocheting your Cockapoo puppy’s head. The forehead is built up by only using a partial increase for a section of the pattern instructions.
You’ll be explanations of each abbreviation when I use them for the first time, but the most common ones you’ll see here are:
- sc – single crochet
- 2sc – make two single crochets into the same stitch
- sc2tog – join two stitches together with one single crochet
The nose detail was hand sewn, but if you want to create yours differently there are plastic noses available that work in the same style as the safety eyes.

Sewing Your Cockapoo Crochet Toy Together
If you haven’t sewed your Cockapoo toy together as you went along, now’s the time. Use tight single hand sewn stitches with your yarn needle. Weave in and out each stitch of the limb or head or tail, to tightly secure it in place.
When you’re done give it a little wiggle to make sure it stays put.
Adding Your Cockapoo’s Fur
You’ll need a slightly pointed yarn needle for this to go smoothly, and a fair bit of patience. I recommend that unless you are a massively keen sewer, you set aside a few separate sessions to work on the fur as it does tax your dexterity!

Thread your yarn needle with a long length of yarn, and slip knot it into the fabric of the ear, back or tail. Wherever you’d like your fur to be most prominent. Create the looped fur effect by pulling the thread through each gap, but leaving a small loop protruding from the fabric of the toy. I use one hand to pinch the previous loop to keep it in place whilst I make each next one.

Crocheting Your Cockapoo
This Cockapoo crochet pattern was a little outside my comfort zone in terms of sewing, but I’m really pleased with the result. And more importantly, so is the wonderful friend whose beloved dog I wanted to honor with it.
