How To Crochet V Stitch – Beginners’ Guide

V stitch is one of the most under rated crochet skills around. It’s super simple to make, but has a really bold finish that can add something special to most crochet projects.
Standard V stitch crochet is made using double crochets, but I’ll give you another option here too using half double crochets that creates a surprisingly different finish for a very similar design. We also have a few different granny square versions and clusters of this stitch that you might like to check out too
Stitch Guide
To make a V stitch you need to know a few basic crochet stitches. For these tutorials you’ll need to be familiar with:
- dc – double crochet
- ch – chain
- sk – skip
- hdc – half double crochet

V Stitch Crochet Tutorial
Our first V stitches will be made in the most common way, which is using double crochets.

Foundation Chain
Make a chain that is a multiple of 3, plus 2.

Row 1
Start in the 4th chain from the hook. *(dc, ch1, dc), sk2. Repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, then dc into the final stitch.

Row 2
ch2, *(dc, ch1, dc), sk2. Repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, then dc into the final stitch.

Row 3 onwards
Repeat row 2 as many times as desired!

V Stitches With HDC
This time we’re going to do exactly the same thing, but substituting in half double crochets in place of the double crochets.

Foundation Chain
Make a chain that is a multiple of 3, plus 2.
Row 1
Start in the 4th chain from the hook. *(ddc, ch1, ddc), sk2. Repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, then hdc into the final stitch.

Row 2
ch2, *(hdc, ch1, hdc), sk2. Repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, then hdc into the final stitch.

Row 3 onwards
Repeat row 2 as many times as desired!
