We will get started with one which requires just two crochet techniques, the chain and the slip stitch.

Chain Petal Crochet Flowers

Chain petal crochet flowers are created using simple chains, joined together to form the shape of a flower.

0001-125652452You can keep them straight forward as shown in the pattern below, or build them together to form one with multiple layers.

We have a couple of colour variations shown. One is made using a single colour for the centre and petals, the other using two different colours.

To create your chain petal crochet flowers, you will need the following:

  • 4mm crochet hook
  • Dk yarn in two colours, one neutral and one bright.
  • scissors
  • yarn needle

If you want uniform colour then just ignore the instruction between rows to change colour.

Begin in your neutral colour, using your 4mm crochet hook.

0001-126198859Row 1

Make a chain of 5 stitches, and slip stitch into the first chain to join as a loop.

Chain 2 (ch2), then put 7 single crochets (7sc) into the centre of the loop.

Slip stitch (sl st) into the top of the chain to join.

Attach the yarn, cut off and using your yarn needle sew in the loose end.

Take up your brightly coloured yarn if you would like the petals to be a different colour, then begin the next row.

0001-125652754Row 2

Attach the yarn to one of the single crochets from the previous row.

*Ch6 then slip stitch into the next stitch.

Repeat from * for the length of the round.

To finish slip stitch into the stitch your initial chain was made from.

Attach the yarn, cut off a tail and using your yarn needle sew in the loose ends.

Your chain petal crochet flowers can be used as pretty appliques, either individually or in clusters.

Granny Pentagon Crochet Flowers

These crochet flowers are made beginning on the same basis as a granny square, but with five corners instead of four.

0001-125655619I find that they look best with a pale central colour and a brighter colour for the petals.

If you are using them to make a blanket or throw then you might like to use several matching or high contrasting colours for the petals, but keeping the centers the same colour for continuity.

To make your granny square crochet flowers you will need:

  • Dk yarn in two colours – one neutral and one white
  • 5mm crochet hook
  • scissors
  • yarn needle

Begin in your crochet flowers in a neutral colour, using the 5mm crochet hook.

0001-125653092Row 1

Make a chain of 4 stitches, then slip stitch to join as a loop.

Ch3, then make 2 double crochets (2dc) into the centre of the loop.

*Ch2, then make 3dc into the centre of the loop. Repeat from * three times.

Ch2 then slip stitch to join to the top of the initial ch3.

Attach the yarn, cut off and sew in the loose end.

Swap to your bright petal colour.

0001-126186832Row 2

Into one of the corner gaps, ch3.

Put 6dc into the same corner.

Without chaining, put 7dc into each of the remaining corners.

At the end of the round slip stitch into the top of the ch3 to join.

Attach the yarn, cut off a long tail and sew in the loose end using your yarn needle.

0001-125651204

These crochet flowers are perhaps best used in large numbers, to make gorgeous blankets.

They can be attached delicately by sewing at the points of each corner, to make an open weave throw. Or you can crochet flowers together to create a firmer, more solid structure to your blanket.

Small Petal Crochet Flowers

0001-126234717The small petal crochet flowers are worked from wide middles, with small petals around the outside.

To create your small petal crochet flowers you will require the following equipment:

  • 4mm crochet hook
  • Dk yarn in a pale and a bright colour
  • scissors
  • yarn needle

Start with your neutral pale colour using the 4mm crochet hook.

Work the first two rows in a spiral.

Row 1

0001-125654809Make a chain of 6 stitches, slip stitching into the first chain to join.

Ch2, then put 14sc into the central loop.

Row 2

Make 1sc into the next stitch, 2sc into the following stitch. Repeat for round (1sc x 1, 2sc). Slip stitch into the first stitch to join, attach, cut off and sew in the loose ends.

The next rows will be build up individually.

Row 3

Ch2, then put 2sc in the next stitch. 1sc into the following 11 stitches, 2sc into the next, then 1sc to the end of the round. Slip stitch into the top of the ch2 to join.

Attach the yarn, cut off the tail and sew it in.

Swap to your brightly coloured thread to complete the flower.

0001-126189284Row 4

Attach the new yarn into any stitch.

Make the following into each stitch around the circle

*slip stitch, then 2sc next, then 1dc next, then 2sc next, then sl st next.

Repeat from * for the duration of the round.

At the end of the round,  attach the yarn, cut off and sew in the loose end.

I like to use the small petal crochet flowers as individual embellishments on other items, like hats and scarves. They can accentuate your pieces, providing some subtle but textured colour and personality.

They also work well on crochet wall hangings and as features on baby mobiles too.

Waved Petal Crochet Flowers

0001-126208509The waved petal crochet flowers are textured with raised curved petals when they are finished.

This gives a more realistic appearance to the flower, as well as more pronounced features.

For this pattern you will require the following crochet equipment

  • 4mm crochet hook
  • Dk yarn in a pale and a bright colour
  • scissors
  • yarn needle

Begin using your 4mm crochet hook and using your pale coloured yarn.

Row 1

0001-125655297Make a magic circle of 6 stitches.

Put 2sc into each stitch in the round.

At the end of the round you will have a total of 12 stitches.

At the end of the round attach the yarn.

Cut off the tail and sew in the loose end.

Colour change to the bright yarn to begin the next row.

Row 2

0001-126208083Attach the yarn at any stitch around the circle.

Slip stitch into the first stitch, then make 6 double crochets (6dc) into the second.

*sl st into the next, 6dc into the next.

Repeat from * for the round.

At the end of the round, attach the yarn.

Cut off the tail and use your yarn needle to sew in the loose end.

Waved petal crochet flowers make beautiful applique embellishments for accessories, items of clothing and even soft furnishings like cushion covers.

I think a cushion covered in these flowers in a variety of colours would like pretty cool.

Raised Crochet Flowers

0001-126234569Raised crochet flowers make a fun variation to the crochet flower theme.

Rather than being flat like the applique style flowers about, they have volume and width to them. This makes them ideal for more tactile creative pieces.

For these flowers I only use one uniform yarn type and colour, as I feel the added level to the raised crochet flowers looks better when more simply presented.

  • Dk yarn in a pale colour
  • 4mm crochet hook
  • scissors
  • yarn needle

Using your 4mm hook and your neutral coloured yarn begin from the centre of the pattern.

0001-125654535Row 1

Make a chain of 6 stitches, and slip stitch into the first to form a loop.

Ch2, then make 15sc into the center of the loop.

At the end of the row slip stitch into the top of the starting chain.

Row 2

Chain 6, skip 1 stitch, then slip stitch into the following. Repeat (ch6, sk, sl st) 7 times.

At the end of the row slip stitch into the stitch your chain began from.

Attach the yarn, cut off the tail and sew in the loose end.

0001-126216054Row 3

Into one of the petal loops, attach the yarn and ch3.

4dc into the same loop.

*slip stitch into the previous row’s slip stitch between this petal and the next.

Then make 5dc into the following loop. Repeat from * for each petal.

At the end of the round attach the yarn, cut off and sew in the loose end.

0001-126218375

Raised flowers work well in dense clusters. To join them together use a needle and thread to sew the points of the flowers through the ridged edge.

Granny Square Crochet Flowers

0001-126225674Your granny square crochet flowers will be built in a similar manner to the traditional granny square crochet pattern.

These flowers are frequently used to make floral granny square blankets. They can be sewn together, crocheted together or built in one continuous run.

You will need to use the following crochet equipment:

  • 5mm crochet hook
  • Dk yarn in a pale and two different bright colours
  • scissors
  • yarn needle

Begin your crochet pattern using the pale coloured yarn and your 5mm crochet hook.

0001-126221057Row 1

Make a chain of 4 stitches and slip stitch into the first chain to form a loop.

Ch3, then make 11dc into the middle of the loop. Slip stitch to join.

Attach the yarn, cut off the tail and sew in the loose end.

Using another bright coloured yarn, begin the next row.

Row 2

0001-126223548From any of the outer stitches, make a ch3 (to become your first double crochet/dc).

1dc into the same stitch, 2dc into the next.

Into each stitch follow the pattern *ch3, 2dc x 2. Repeat from * for the round.

The beginnings of your petals will be formed from 6 clusters of 4 double crochets.

At the end of the round, attach the yarn, cut off and sew in the tail.

Colour change to your other brightly shaded yarn.

Row 3

0001-125765139Into one of the chain spaces, attach your yarn.

Ch3, then put 6dc in the same space.

*sc between your two 2dc clusters to form the base of the petal.

7dc into the next chain space.

Repeat from the * for the rest of the round.

Slip stitch into the first petal to join.

Attach your yarn, cut off and sew in the loose tail.

Uses for crochet flowers

Crochet flowers aren’t just individual pretty objects. They are also something a lot greater than that.

They have the potential to not just embellish, but to become a whole new crochet creation when they are multiplied.

Crochet flower appliques

You can turn your crochet flower into an appliqué simply by sewing it onto a piece of fabric. Or another work of crochet. This can be applied to clothing, blankets, throws or any other soft furnishing.

0001-125660805If you want to use your crochet flowers as appliqués, I recommend that before you begin you decide what you are going to use them for.

This will help you decide how many to make, as well as which size and shape will best fit with your design.

You can also co-ordinate colours before you begin.

The flowers I have made in the photos shown in this article are all going to be used as appliqués on a dress I am going to make for my little girl.

I have recently got my hands on a sewing machine, and the first thing I use it for is going to be embellished with crochet flowers.

Crochet flower blankets

There are two ways you use can crochet flowers when making a blanket.

Blankets or throws can be beautifully enhanced with the addition of crochet flowers.

0001-126228882If you have made a traditional granny square crochet blanket, then your individual flowers can be crocheted onto the surface of the design.

If your throw is made of a fabric, or is a quilted sewn duvet for example, you can use a needle and thread to sew your crochet flower on instead.

Make sure that you use a thread of a similar colour to the throw and sew into the back of the flower, so that the stitches aren’t exposed.

Blankets or throws can also be comprised entirely of crochet flowers.

You can produce this kind of blanket by taking a large number of crochet flowers, and either crocheting or sewing them together.

The granny square style of crochet flowers are the easiest to attach together in this manner, as they form flat symmetrical shapes. There edges align nicely, especially if you pin them in shape for a couple of days before joining them together.
