I don’t know about you, but I really love bean stitches. Not only do they add a pretty pattern to your crochet, but the texture is really lovely too. This is one of my favorites in terms of how easy it is to hold and fidget with, something I do with my keys quite a lot!

What You’ll Need

  • 4mm crochet hook
  • DK yarn
  • Yarn needle (optional for sewing in loose ends)

I used a 50% cotton acrylic blend yarn from Hobbii for the keychains you’ll see pictured among this crochet pattern. I highly recommend you use a cotton blend of at least 40% or more, because keychains put up with a lot of punishment and cotton is a tough fiber. They will be bent, misshapen, and definitely need cleaning. All of which are best suited to a more durable yarn material!

Insert hook, yarn over and pull through. Yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, yarn over and pull through. Yarn over again, insert hook into the same stitch again, yarn over and pull through. Yarn over a final time and pull through all six loops on your hook.

If you are struggling to make bean stitches into your chain, try remaking the chain with a larger size of crochet hook to give you bigger loops. I also find that pulling through the six loops on the hook is easiest with a more narrow but sharper ended crochet hook.

Crochet keychains come in so many fun varieties, but I’ve been having a great time lately making a bunch of different fob style versions. And I’m so happy to show you this one that made use of one of my favorite stitches, waffle stitch!

photos of waffle stitch crochet keychains

Waffle stitches look and feel amazing. The raised texture is totally distinctive, yet it is one of the more time consuming stitches. Which, if you’re like me, puts you off using it in bigger designs. It’s therefore an awesome one to use for these smaller crochet projects.

waffle stitch crochet keychains

Equipment

  • High percentage cotton DK yarn
  • 4mm crochet hook
  • Steel yarn needle
  • Keychain attachment

I highly recommend using a high cotton yarn for this pattern, because it’s increased durability will make your gorgeous creation likely to last longer. Keychains stand up to a lot of punishment, and potential for mess, so it’s a great idea to also use a yarn that has the potential to be able to be safely washed too.

fpdc – double crochet into the front post
1dc x 2 – make one double crochet into each of the next two stitches

Waffle stitch is a term for the crocheted pattern created through alternating groups of double crochets and front post double crochets. It’s a more time consuming way to crochet than some stitches, but little projects like this are a great way to make good use of it.

I have really fallen in love with sedge stitch recently. The depth of the texture these simple stitches make is so rewarding in terms of how it looks and feels.

I don’t know about you, but I love a keychain that I can fiddle with and enjoy the feeling of!

We’ve all got our keys in our hands a lot of the time, and you might as well make sure you love the look of them! And what better way to show off your crochet skills than a gorgeous handmade keychain too.

sedge stitch crochet keychains

What to use

I used a 4mm crochet hook and DK weight cotton blend yarns to make the keychains that you can see pictured. These varied from a high cotton percentage to an around 50/50 cotton merino wool blend.

Depending upon the weight and fiber of yarn you use, your keychain fob will end up being around 3 inches long.

photo of a sedge stitch crochet keychain

I recommend that you go with a yarn that doesn’t just have a color that you love, but that is a higher percent cotton because, let’s face it, keychains go through a lot. You shove them in your pocket, drop them in the footwell of the car, leave them in a coffee stain… Maybe that’s just me? But they really do need to stand up to a bit of punishment, and the higher cotton content is going to have a more rigid structure and be easier to wipe clean if it picks up a bit of yuck!

You are also going to need some sort of keychain attachment, I have shown a few options in the photo and as long as it will fit around your crocheted fabric then it’ll be fine to use.

crochet keychains sedge stitch

The Stitches

ch – chain
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
sk – skip

You’ll have seen that I mentioned sedge stitch in the title, and yet I haven’t included it in the terms above. That’s because a sedge stitch is simply a series of clusters and skips, where each cluster is made up of a single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet. Impressive name, but actually totally simple to create using some very beginner friendly stitches.

I have made a crochet seal before, but this amigurumi seal keychain is on a rather different scale. A much smaller one!

It fits neatly onto my house keys, and slides into my pocket like the slippery creature itself does into a pool.

This pattern took less than two hours to design, so a keen crocheter could have themselves a whole gang of seal pals in no time at all.

Your Kit List

Abbreviations and Techniques

  • magic circle
  • sc – single crochet
  • ch – chain
  • 2sc – put two single crochets into one stitch
  • sc2tog – join two stitches with one single crochet
  • sk – skip the next stitch along
  • slst – slip stitch

The Free Amigurumi Seal Keychain Pattern

You are going to create your seal in sections, which will be hand sewn together. Every part of him will be made using your gray DK yarn and 2.5mm crochet hook.

Attaching the Keychain

Finally you can attach your keychain blank to the top of your seal. I’d aim for a stitch around the largest section of the body. You can either loop the ring through, or sew it on like I have in the same color of yarn.

I’ve designed a few keychain patterns lately, but my mouse is by far the most popular when I’ve shown it to people. Fortunately, this crochet mouse is very fast to make, so it won’t be long before I have a batch to hand out to friends and family!

It’d make a great market day project, or last minute gift. And if you want to avoid clearing out your kitchen cupboards or scrubbing the bathroom, this project will take about the same amount of time as these much less enjoyable tasks! (Not that I’ve been using crochet to avoid housework this week…)

Attaching the Keychain

I attached the keychain ring onto my mouse toy by sewing in the gray yarn through the ring and a stitch at the top of the head, just behind and between the ears.

I am really pleased with this tiny, stripped-back crochet lion keychain design. And you can make your own in the time it would have taken you to vacuum your home – I’m sure we can agree this is a much more productive way to spend the day.

photos of a crochet lion keychain

I’ve always wanted to design a lion pattern, but despite several false starts I have never pulled off a crochet lion toy that I was happy to release for you as a pattern. Until today, that is! And this is even better than my original ideas, because it’s fast, easy and you can even make one just using your yarn scrap stash like I did.

Your Kit List

Here’s what I used to create this pattern. As usual, I’ve overestimated the yarn weights by a fair amount, because nothing frustrates me more than not having enough yarn to finish a project!

If you don’t have any yellow or orange yarn kicking around, you might want to check out my axolotl, pig or cat keychains instead!

Round 14

1sc x 24

Insert the safety eyes at round five level.

Round 15

Round 17

Fill with toy stuffing.

Round 18 – 21

Round 29

sc2tog x 4 and sew closed.

Tipping the Tail

picture of my amigurumi lion keychain side on

To make your lion’s tail fluffy you are going to crochet a series of chains in the orange yarn.

Cast onto your hook, then slst into the center of the tail’s magic circle.

*Ch8, then slst into the next stitch in the round. Repeat from * four more times.

Hide the tail of the yarn inside the stub of the yellow section.

Crocheting the Ears

Work with your 2.5mm crochet hook and yellow yarn.

picture of my amigurumi lion keychain face on

Round 1

Make a magic circle of five stitches (5)

Round 2

2sc x 5 (10)

Round 3

1sc x 10

Now sew each ear so that it sits three rounds behind the eyes.

Your Amigurumi Lion’s Mane

picture of my amigurumi lion keychain in my hand

Crochet your lion’s mane in orange yarn as a separate piece.

  • Ch34 and slst to the first loop to make a ring.
  • *Ch8, slst to the next stitch in the ring. Repeat from * until you reach the end of the circle.

Slip the loop over your amigurumi lion keychain’s ears and tuck it under it’s chin so it fits snuggly and evenly around him. Now take a length of the same colored yarn, and weave in and out with your needle, sewing it securely to the toy.

Attaching the Keychain

picture of my amigurumi lion keychain from above

Join the keychain to the middle of the lion’s head, just behind the mane. I sewed the loop on by weaving back and forth three times in the yellow colored yarn. You can attach the chain directly to a stitch, and this might be more secure, but it will cause that stitch and those next to it to stretch a little.

This is the third piggy pattern I have designed, and my new amigurumi pig keychain pattern is by far the simplest and quickest to work up. It’s the tiniest too, designed to fit nicely into your pocket.

I intended to use it on my keychain, but it took approximately nine seconds from completion to relocation in my daughter’s instead. Ah well, it won’t take me too long to make another one!

Attaching the Keychain

To attach the keychain ring I sew through a stitch at the top of the head, back and forth at least three times using the same colored yarn.

I’ve made a bunch of these keyring designs over the past few days, and they’ll be going up onto the site shortly. But in the meantime I have a huge stash of cute tiny critters, which my kids are already debating ownership over. Which can’t be a bad sign!

My household has gone Full Axolotl in the last few days. Which is funny, because it’s one of the few pets we don’t have here… for now. Both my kids picked up different styles of axolotl toys at a fair at the weekend, and my envy of their purchases inspired this new amigurumi axolotl keychain pattern.

My crochet axolotl used a tiny amount of yarn, but has such a big personality. And given you can work one up in the time it’d take to make a meal from scratch, I might make a few more and stash them in my drawer as potential last minute gifts!

What You’ll Need

This is what I used to design my amigurumi axolotl keychain:

Techniques and Tips

Free Amigurumi Axolotl Keychain Pattern

I made my crochet axolotl in three sections, the head, body and tail, then the tail fin detailing and finally the gills around the face.

This section will create from your axolotl’s head to the tip of their tail.

Round 2

2sc x 8 (16)

Round 3

(1sc, 2sc) x 8 (24)

Round 4 – 5

Round 6

(1sc x 2, 2sc) x 8 (32)

Round 7

(1sc x 3, 2sc) x 8 (40)

Round 8 – 10

1sc x 40

Round 11

(1sc x 3, sc2tog) x 8 (32)

Round 12 – 13

1sc x 32

Round 14

(1sc x 2, sc2tog) x 8 (24)

Round 15 – 16

1sc x 24

Insert safety eyes at round 6 level.

Round 17

(1sc, sc2tog) x 8 (16)

Round 18 – 20

Fill with toy stuffing.

Round 21

sc2tog to close

Detailing the Tail

Continue working in your 2.5mm crochet hook, but this time you’ll switch to surface crocheting.

Cast onto your hook, and slip stitch into a point equivalent to exactly between the axolotl’s eyes but 15 rounds back, then working directly towards the point of the tail make 1sc in each stitch. Continue around the underneath of your axolotl until you are directly under your first stitch. Then slip stitch to join, and weave the loose tail back into the body.

Crochet Axolotl Gills

I switched it up for the gills, because they need to really stand out. You’ll need your 3mm crochet hook and some darker pink cotton blend yarn.

Make two of the following:

Row 1

Ch6, sk, 1sc x 5

Row 2

Ch7, sk, 1sc x 5

Row 3

Ch7, sk, 1sc x 5

Once you have made your two gil sections, hand sew them to either side of the eyes using the same colored yarn.

Attaching the Keychain

picture of the amigurumi axolotl keychain on some yarn

There are several ways you can attach your keychain, but this is how I did mine.

I bought a bulk pack of blank keychains online, and they came unassembled. Once I’d opened them and had a good look at what I was dealing with, I chose the parts that looked best on the toy, and then took the same color yarn as the body of the axolotl. I hand sewed the chain onto the body, because I decided I’d rather have the low risk of the yarn snapping than the high risk of the stitches deforming when I pushed the ring through. But there is no wrong way!
