Fair Isle Crochet Basket

September 11, 2016 By Lucy

basket3

This week I have put together a quick new crochet basket pattern, using some pretty fair isle yarn that I hope you will love!

Crochet baskets are featuring heavily on my Pinterest feed at the moment.

I have been finding the range of ideas, designs and colors very inspiring.

The free crochet pattern I have produced below is nice and simple to work, suitable for beginners and fast to make.

The perfect rainy day project!

Fair Isle Crochet Basket Equipment

To follow this pattern you will need the equipment listed below:

  • H / Size 8 / 5mm Crochet Hook
  • 2 x 50g of Fair Isle Effect Double Knit Yarn (I have used Sirdar Crofter in the basket shown here).
  • 50g Cream Double Knit Yarn
  • 50g White Double Knit Yarn

To make this crochet basket you can use any combination of DK yarn colors, but I recommend using pale for the top portion and darker for the lower portion if you want to replicate the effect shown here.

Fair Isle Crochet Basket Stitches

The majority of this pattern is made using basic chains, slip stitches and single crochets.

If you are new to crochet then check out this article on basic crochet stitches and techniques.

crochet yarnIt give details of how to form chains, work slip stitches and make single crochets.

The upper rim of the Fair Isle Crochet Basket is complete using puff stitches.

A puff stitch is made by picking up strands of yarn and holding them taunt.

To form a puff stitch, yarn over hook, hook through the stitch, pick up the yarn and pull through. Then pinching the strand of yarn onto the hook, hook through again pick up another strand and pull it back through. Hold this long as well. Repeat this one final time, then yarn over hook again, and pull it through all of the strands on the hook.

Here is a video tutorial showing this technique if you would like further clarification:

The following abbreviations will be used in this pattern:

Ch = Chain
Sc = Single Crochet
Sl St = Slip Stitch
PS = Puff Stitch

Fair Isle Crochet Basket Pattern

To make the Fair Isle Crochet Basket you will need to use two strands of yarn at all times. This gives the strength and structure to the basket to allow the sides to stay upright.

In order to do this easily, you will want to buy two balls of fair isle yarn to work with a strand from each. Hold these two strands together and work exactly as you would with a single strand.

Begin using your H / Size 8 / 5mm crochet hook and two strands of fair isle patterned yarn.

Making Your Own Crochet Basket

Making your own crochet basket gives you a lot of opportunities to get creative. Give your basket a unique twist by making it taller or shorter by adding or subtracting rows.

basket2

Give it a wider rim with additional rows of puff stitches, or simply change the colors that you selected instead.

I hope you enjoy creating your own basket, why not share photos of your creations on my Facebook page or let us know your thoughts in the comments section below?
