Crochet beginners often worry about the quality of their work.
It’s human nature to want to do well, but crochet is a learned skill. I am yet to meet a single person who perfected this on their first attempt.
Learn To Learn
For every amazing crochet artist you come across, there are dozens if not hundreds who never reached their potential. Because they gave up before they made it to that point.
Crochet is relatively easy to pick up, but this doesn’t mean that you are going to be instantly perfect.
So to help you feel more confident in your early projects, I have taken a few photographs of my early crochet projects to share with you.
It’s also fun to look back and see how far you’ve come!
My Old Crochet Projects
This is the very first crochet object I ever made. This mouse was created by painstakingly following a YouTube tutorial. I knew it didn’t look right when I had finished, but I was still and frankly am still, ridiculous proud of it. The effort and concentration it took, and how carefully I crocheted along.
I now obviously know exactly where I went wrong. Overstuffing, not stitching the limbs on securely, and crocheting far too loosely. But it doesn’t matter. It’s a part of my history, and helped me to get to where I am now. It’s therefore one of the most precious things I have ever made.
The next animal I made went a lot better, a panda from the legendary Edward’s Menagerie crochet book.
The monkey and zebra came next, and by this time I felt I was getting into my stride a bit more.
They aren’t perfect, but I love them and importantly so does my daughter.
It was around this time I decided to try and write patterns of my own. This lion is the first pattern I ever created entirely by myself.
But these failures and successes have paved the way for a hobby that has transformed into a passion.
It calms me when I’m stressed, and gives me focus when my mind escapes me.
If you are a beginner feeling disappointed – please don’t give up.
Keep on learning, keep on practicing and I am sure that it will soon do the same for you.
