It should work up just fine in any acrylic DK, but as I’m sure you know some are nicer to work with than others! https://lucykatecrochet.com/crocheting-with-acrylic-yarn

Can any brand of DK weight acrylic yarn be used in substitution for the recommended yarns? Do you have any recommendations. Thank you

Comment on Star Granny Square by Roxanne https://lucykatecrochet.com/star-granny-square#comment-43687 Fri, 22 May 2026 20:13:16 +0000 https://lucykatecrochet.com/?p=5275#comment-43687 great pattern!! clear, easy to follow, and the pictures helped so much. this square will be a great addition to the granny tote bag i am making with lots of different designs, and i definitely want to make a project using only this square. i used 2 colors only, one for the star and one for the rest, following where to cut and fasten off as the pattern instructs, and it turned out really great!

I’ve had a quick look at the instructions you offer, and am delighted to have every bit of advice. No one else seems to provide that! I am definitely one of those people who happily beaver away producing parts, even modifying* patterns to suit my whim, but I totally balk at the final assembly. (I still have a bag of granny squares that were never joined into an afghan!)
*(For example, on your unicorn, I have contoured the legs to look more horsey, and I have opted for multicoloured embroidery floss strands joined to a tassle to create the tail and more coloured floss to be woven into a strip of curtain fringe trim for the mane. We’ll see if that was a wise move when it all comes together!)

I am glad to hear you’re enjoying it! Sewing is done with yarn, yes. Ideally the same one that you used for the construction. You can find instructions for sewing here: https://lucykatecrochet.com/amigurumi-sewing

It’s a problem, isn’t it! It’s a bit of a minefield, but I do have a couple of YouTube videos on the Lucy Kate Crochet channel which talk about ways to spot AI patterns, you can find them here: https://youtu.be/EsT5tyotZTk
