I am glad to hear you’re enjoying it! Sewing is done with yarn, yes. Ideally the same one that you used for the construction. You can find instructions for sewing here: https://lucykatecrochet.com/amigurumi-sewing

It’s a problem, isn’t it! It’s a bit of a minefield, but I do have a couple of YouTube videos on the Lucy Kate Crochet channel which talk about ways to spot AI patterns, you can find them here: https://youtu.be/EsT5tyotZTk

A turning chain is traditionally just chain stitches, in the number that fits with the stitch it’s replacing. So if I’m making rows of single crochets, when i’ve made my final single crochet of the row, I make a chain of two, then turn my work. This chain acts as a replacement for your first single crochet of this new row. Hope that makes sense!

To turn a granny square solid you do add stitches in some of the gaps, yes. You can find instructions for solid granny squares here: https://lucykatecrochet.com/solid-granny-square

Also, is the sewing of the legs (and head) to the body done with yarn? Is there a specific technique?
I am enjoying this project, learning a lot! Thank you.

There are some I can tell right away they are fake, but some I can not and I do not want to click on them if they are AI. I actually hadn’t looked at the hand on the smurf you shared until I read what you said. I don’t want you and other artists to go away, I want to be able to see your work and appreciate it, and hopefully replicate some of it. So are they any hints on how to tell on the more subtle fakes?

Is it just a normal sc at the end of the foundation? If I need more (for example the Treble Crotchet) do I just do sc vertically? I’m not sure because there’s no video or pictures showing what a turning chain is exactly.

What’s the trick to making it more solid – minimising the holes at the corners where it turns into squares?

I am so sorry to hear this! I’m sure you are no fool, new things are just hard sometimes. Did you have a look at the video, some people learn better from them than the written instructions. Do let me know you get along, you’ve got this!
